Gov. Jay Nixon visited the Calhoun R-VIII School District to announce six new investments through the Missouri Start Smart initiative to expand access to quality early childhood education opportunities so that more Missouri children start kindergarten ready to succeed in school and beyond.
During his visit to Calhoun, the Governor announced that through the Missouri Start Smart initiative, the Missouri Department of Economic Development will authorize a funding award of $852,000 for the Calhoun Community Development Group to assist the school district in constructing a new 19,500 square foot pre-kindergarten facility that will serve an additional 30 children in Calhoun.
In addition to the award in Calhoun, the Governor today also announced five other funding awards through the Start Smart initiative:
St. Martin's Child Center -- Ferguson-Florissant School District; $1,089,000 in funding through the Neighborhood Assistance Program to assist the St. Martin's Child Center in Berkeley in adding 5,000 square feet to its existing facility in order to serve 50 additional children, including 18 slots set aside for children with special needs.
The I. Jerome and Rosemary Flance Early Childhood Education Center at Murphy Park --St. Louis Public Schools; $367,000 in funding through the Neighborhood Assistance Program to help Urban Strategies Inc. develop the Flance Center, a new 23,864-square-foot pre-K facility that will serve up to 154 children.
Community Child Development Center -- Macon R-1, Bevier C-4 and Atlanta C-3 school districts. $353,037 in funding through the Neighborhood Assistance Program to help expand an existing pre-K facility by an additional 2,400 square feet to serve an additional 18 children.
Polo R-VII Education Foundation -- Polo R-VII School District (Caldwell County). $981,875 in funding through a Community Development Block Grant and the Neighborhood Assistance Program to construct a 4,000-square-foot pre-K facility to replace a temporary leased facility, and serve an additional 35 children.
Favored Foundation for Strengthening Families (Good Shepherd Early Learning Center) --St. Louis Public Schools. $600,000 in funding through the Neighborhood Assistance Program to help construct a 6,208-square-foot pre-K facility to accommodate 52 children.
In January, Gov. Nixon announced that early childhood education would be a central focus of his efforts to continue to strengthen education and grow Missouri's economy.
As the first official business of his second term, the Governor met with early childhood education officials, educators and advocates about the importance of improving and expanding access to quality early learning opportunities.
After Gov. Nixon proposed increasing funding for the Missouri Preschool Program and Early Head Start in his State of the State Address, the legislature approved an increase of $6.9 million for these programs in the Fiscal Year 2014 budget.
Additionally, the Governor directed the Department of Economic Development earlier this year to solicit proposals for competitive Missouri Start Smart funding to support the development, expansion or improvement of high-quality early childhood and pre-kindergarten programs throughout the state.
Previously, the Governor announced early education awards to Mt. Pleasant Education & Development Corp. ($480,000) and the Emmanuel Center ($1 million) to assist the Kansas City Public School District; to the Van Buren Bulldog Booster Club Inc. ($29,450) to assist the Van Buren R-1 Schools; Missouri Valley Community Action Agency ($996,121) to assist the Richmond R-XVI School District; and Jefferson City Day Care Center ($400,000) to assist the Jefferson City Public Schools.
Gov. Nixon has made public education in Missouri a top priority of his administration. This month, the Governor told public education leaders that he was working to fully fund the K-12 foundation formula by the end of his second term in 2017. Even during the height of the recession, Gov. Nixon worked across the aisle to balance the budget every year without raising taxes or making deep cuts to K-12 classrooms. Math and reading scores have increased on his watch and Missouri's high school graduation rate is now the eighth highest in the nation.
